NOTABLE ACCOMPLISHMENTS
On the heels of a very strong 1985 season the 1986 Malvern squad, with 22 seniors, was ready to make another strong run at the IA title and finish as one of the best teams in Southeast Pennsylvania. They did not disappoint.
Gamp’s Friars got out of the gates quickly and made a strong statement on how the year would go with a 40-6 rout of Valley Forge. QB Mike Augsberger started season showing why he was a league MVP with TD run of 22, 3 and 4 yards. RBs White and Kirk added one each and Rob Levan finished off the deluge of points. The fatties up front pounded for 262 yards on the ground. The defense made their own “watch out “statement as Valley Forge only crossed mid field one time against the 1st Team. The big boys up front- Bill McMillan, Gene Chakejian, Dave Rogers, Mike Schlitig ably backed up by Chris Treston, Rich Liberatore and Jeff Caldwell showed that opponents that there were going to be no freebies this year.
Like they did in 1985 the Friars shut out Calvert Hall again. Augsberger had the only score of the 1st half. In the 2nd half it was a Bellopede field goal from 19 yards out and a Pauly 3 yard run to finish off the offensive scoring. Matt Ryan’s 40 yard pick six on defense completed the shutout. QB Augsberger threw for 107 yards and ran for 48 yards.
Two Augsberger scores and a White two pointer gave the Friars a 15-14 lead against Glen Mills. Unfortunately, a Glen Mills score with 2:47 to go in the game prevented the boys in blue from attaining an undefeated season. The Friars put this loss in the rearview mirror and made the rest of their opponents pay the price.
Poor Palmyra. They happened to be the next opponent after Glen Mills and the 1st team to pay the price. Joe Carpenter caught two, Jeff Caldwell caught one in the aerial assault. The Friards scored on all their drives in the 1st half. Both Augsberger and Erik White contributed two scores on the ground. Reserves finished it ff with a John Fay to Coleman TD pass. QB1 was almost perfect going 8-9 for 147 yards on the day. The D picked off 3. Steve Pauly’s interception set up the second score. Not to be outdone, Dan Murphy picked off two on his own. Look out Inter-Ac.
Two Carpenter TD catches and two Kelly Kirk runs were more than enough to take care of Haverford School, The defense made sure of that. 2 picks and 5 sacks eliminated any momentum HS tried to generate. A Chris Treston pick set up Kelly Kirk’s second score. For the game Malvern held Haverford to a -3 yards rushing. Offensively, Kelly Kirk had 17 carries for 77 and Augs had 2 TD passes on 82 yards.
After 5 games the Friars were 4-1 and ranked #2 in Ted Silarys City 10 and #9 in all of SEPA. The Friars were rolling.
GA was the next IA opponent and the Friars made quick work of them, leading 21-0 at half. Joe Carpenter had his second double in a row with two more TD catches. This might sound familiar but Augsberger and Kirk added one each on the ground. Mike College with the last TD. Specials team added to the scoring with Bellopede going a perfect 5 for 5. The Friars are rolling.
Penn Charter always seems to be a battle and this one was a battle for one half. PC and MP were tied 7-7 midway through. Gamp must have given a great speech at half because the Friars came out and dominated. When the offense and defense come together it usually spells trouble for any opponent. Malvern’s 1st drive after half was an 11 play, 80 yard, 8 minute punch you in the face. The Little Quakers could only manage 14 yards after intermission and 45 rushing yards on 24 attempts for the game. The defense recovered 3 fumbles and added a Dave Borneaz interception to stifle 4 Penn Chater drives. The MP offense was led Kelly Kirk with 88 yards, Erick White with 48 yards and Mike Augsberger pitched in with 35. As a team, the Friars rushed for 211 yards. Hats off the road crew up front- Brendan McGill, Mike Schlichtig, Frank Heller, Chris Treston and Dave Rogers. Three down and one to go.
The EA game closely mirrored the Penn Charter game and the result was the same, a Malvern win-28-7. Mike Augsburger was the star of the day throwing TDs to McMillan and McAnally and rushing for another. Augsberger finished with 167 yards of total offense- 74 yards with his feet and 93 yards with his arm. Jeff Caldwell added the other 6 and Bellopede kick all 4 through the uprights. Episcopal only had 48 yards rushing. It might be because the Malvern defense had 7 sacks for -48 yards. Four down and nobody left- INTER-AC CHAMPS!!
Like many MP teams the season never ends with an IA championship. There are usually more games to play. For these Friars, the next game just happened to be against a very solid Downingtown team. Sloppy conditions and a tough Malvern defense shutdown the Downingtown offense, holding them to one touchdown and their top running back to 8 yards. The defense also picked up 3 interceptions and 4 fumbles. The first Malvern touchdown was a classic in ball control- 14 plays and 92 yards, finished off by an Augsberger 2 yard run. The second TD and the Bellopede’s24 yard FG were set up by two Frank Heller fumble recoveries. A Steve Pauly 42 yard burst accounted for the other 1st half TD. This was a quality win against an excellent football program. With the win the Friars moved up to 6th in the Inquirer poll.
Well it wouldn’t be Thanksgiving unless the Friars met the Patriots on Turkey day. Malvern cruised to a 32-12 win. It was 32-0 before Carroll hit the end zone in the 4th. The paper called it a romp and the stats would verify the use of that word. At half MP had 207 yards and Carroll had a -5. For the game the Friars had season best 365 yards with Mike Augsberger accounting for 159 on the ground. Before the 1st team was taken out the Friars had 16 1st downs to Carroll’s 1 and had 309 yards of offense to Carroll’s -3 yard. The defense added 3 more interceptions to their season total. Caldwell, Carpenter, Paul, White and Augsberger each had a TD. Romp was a good word.
Couldn’t verify any interceptions in the Glen Mills or GA but for the other 8 the Friars defense accumulated 16. Not too shabby.
The Friars finished #7 in the Daily News Top Ten, 6 in the SEPA Top 15 and #2 in Ted Silary’s City Top 10.
Mike Augsberger had one of those stand out kind of years. The two time league MVP rushed for 12 TDS, threw for 12 TDs and accumulated 1413 yards of total offense. There are only 5 players in Inter-Ac history to be 2x MVPS. John Haldeman (Haverford School) in 1970 and 1971, Pat Van Horn (MP) in 1977 and 1978, Mike Augsberger in 1985 and 1986, Dox Aitken (Haverford School) in 2014 and 2015 and Keith Maguire (MP) 2017 and 2018.
In 2005, Ted Silary put together a 30 year Malvern Prep All-Star team from the years 1976-2005. Chris Treston, Dave Rogers and Mike Augsberger were on his list of MP players selected. I will be doing a story on this 30 year team in an upcoming Careys Corner. I think when you see the players you might agree they would have gone 10-0 and won every game 52-0.
These seniors went 25-4-1 overall, 11-0-1 in the Inter-Ac and put up 3 more banners. That’s Malvern football.
