ACCOMPLISHMENTS OF NOTE
These Friars started out slow at 2-2-1 but finished with a flurry by winning the last 4 games by an average score of 35-11.
A Shields punt return and TD run, and a Sheridan to Joe Brennan TD pass were not enough in the 21-21 opening tie to Carroll.
Brian Maguire, Joe Sheridan and Pat Cook combined for 197 yards in the 13-0 win over Woodrow Wilson form New Jersey. In the game Sam Dolente went 44 yards with a pick 6.
Multiple players contributed to the Lawrenceville win. Maguire, Cook and QB Joe Sheridan pounded out 310 yards on 34 carries. Brian Maguire led the way with 92. Sheridan was 7-10 for 84 yards, hitting Tom Howley 4 times for 85.
After a tough loss to GA for the title. Malvern took revenge on Episcopal and exploded to the tune of 62 points. MP has scored 50 points in a game 12x but has only scored 60 points two times in the Inter-Ac history. The other time was a 63-50 win over CHA in 2013 (Tops in Team Malvern History). In this game the Friars amassed over 500 yards in total offense. Back in the day that was a ton of yards. Interesting that EA was actually only losing at halftime at 26-18… and then they weren’t. Joe Sheridan tallied 4 scores, Brian Maguire two and Del and Brian McHugh chipped in one a piece. Del led all rushers with 116 yards on 13 carries.
Sheridan and Shields doubled up on the TDs in a 27-0 shutout over Haverford School. Joe had one run and one pass to Ed Schloth. Wally had 16 carries for 150 yards which was much more offense than Haverford had. They had a net of 0 yards in the game.
It wouldn’t be a year-end unless the Friars take on and top St. Joe’s Prep. After last year’s 52-0 pasting the Hawks were looking for a better showing. The Prep scored 1st but MP rebounded with 3 straight scores to lead 20-6 at half. Wally Shields and Joe Sheridan took turns scoring. Two of Wally’s scores were 37 and 80 and yards. For the game, the fatties up front paved the way enough for Wally to total 232 yards on 23 carries.
Sportswriter Dick Weiss had the Friars rated #6 in the area. Two spots behind GA and 3 spots ahead of Penn Charter.
Joe Sheridan and Wally Shields accounted for 58% of Malvern’s scoring in the 1973 season. Even though Germantown Academy won the league the coaches voted Joe Sheridan as the league’s best player.
With a strong finish and many players coming back, the stage was set for the memorable 1974 season ( Careys Corner Review of the 1974 Undefeated Football Friars August 2022).
