A LOOK BACK

Cream of the Malvern Crop

January, 2024

Since 1971, the Bulletin/Daily News has been publishing an All-City team in football (1971) basketball (1972) and baseball (1978) The All-City team is pulled from anyone who played in the Catholic, Public or Inter-Ac league in that given year. As you might imagine that is a very large pool of players. When I posted the All Decade IA teams from 1970 to the present, I got to wondering about how many Malvern Prep players made 1st, 2nd or 3rd team All-City. You were wondering too, right? Below is A VERY long list and shows again the number of VERY good football players who have played football at Malvern Prep. There is the old saying, “It is not the X’s and O’s but the Jimmy and the Joes”. Well, for MP it has been Jimmy, Joe, Mike, John, Chris, George, Frank, Jeff and many, many more. And just in case you were counting, the Joes top the Jimmys 11-6. The Mikes topped them all with 12 honorees. Now I know how some folks feel about post season “All” teams. They can be political in nature or filled with players who made it because their coach pushed hard to get them on the “team”. That’s said, I hope you will admit that the MP guys on this list represent a cross section of some pretty good players who wore the blue and silver over the years.

Grab a cup of coffee and take a look. An extremely special shout out to Brendan Carney, Billy Lockhart and David Orr. See below.

This is a “WHO’S WHO” of Malvern Prep football history. An alphabetic, first name roll call of all the players who have made All-City-1st, 2nd and 3rd team. The list does not include Honorable Mention and I apologize for that. Listing those players will take some time because I have to dig for the actual article in each year. I plan to do that but it is a down the road project. I have had the pleasure of either playing with them, coaching them or watching the rest of them. If you have ever wondered why Malvern has been so good for so long just look at this list.

I have to admit there was a tedious amount of cross checking and cutting/pasting in an attempt to put these names in some sort of easy reference. If you see any errors please let me know and I will get them fixed (www.tedsilary.com). This list is transcribed from who else? Ted Silary (www.tedsilary.com), RIP Ted.

I count a total of 149 players who made the list. Of the 149 players, 28 made All-City 2x ( 1st,2nd or 3rd). The more elite list is that there were ONLY 7 of the 149 players who made All City 1st team twice. You will also see what I believe is the basis for the overall success of the Malvern Prep football program- the multi-sport athlete. There are 8 players who actually made All-City in two sports. I am going out on a very short limb and saying that they were pretty good, overall athletes. Have to love the Malvern two sport athlete. Remember, this list is for football, basketball and baseball. If there was an All-City for lacrosse the list would be much larger. Maybe another down the road project would be to cross reference football players and players who made All American in lacrosse. The football/lax athlete should get a proper shout out and has been an integral part of Malvern’s football success. A player like Billy Conners comes immediately to my mind, in part because I saw all 10 games his senior year. He was an excellent 2x All City football player whose main sport was lacrosse. With as many times as I have mentioned his name throughout Careys Corner articles and MP history you would think I was Billy’s PR agent (2008 Team Page, IA MVPs, Happy Thanksgiving Careys Corner 6-20, MP Players vs The World Careys Corner 5-22, to name a few). Billy’s one game performance against St. Joe Prep on Thanksgiving 2008 was one of the best single game performances I have ever witnessed. His whole 2008 football season was a pretty good run too. Billy went to Duke for lacrosse and won a national title.

Please note that this article does not include players from 2019, 2020 and 2021. In 2019 and 2021 they did not publish an All City Team and 2019 was the Covid year. This would exclude one of my choices of one of the best athletes I have ever seen at MP- Lonnie White. This is not the 1st time I highlighted Lonnie in a Careys’ Corner article. His accomplishments have been duly noted before. Like Billy Conners, when you are that good, your name will probably keep popping up. I am pretty confident that if the Covid year did not shorten the season, Lonnie would have been the only player in MP history to finish his career with 1000 yards rushing, receiving and passing.

For now, please enjoy a great list of Malvern football players 1971-2018
