Friars open Inter-Ac with dominant win
NEWTON SQUARE ā Not much went wrong for the Friars in their 41-0 win over Episcopal Academy Friday night, as Malvern Prep opened Inter-Ac play in dominating fashion.
Shaking off two early fumbles in the first quarter, EA fumbled themselves late in the quarter and it was scooped up and scored by Jake Bauer. Bauer then punched it in for a fullback dive four minutes into the second quarter, before he scooped up yet another Churchmen fumble. And on the first play of the next drive, Jackson Melconian would connect with Cade Cooper for the 22-yard score.
The Friarsā scoring just kept coming though. Melconian hooked up with PJ Holmes and Ben Kumpon on back-to-back deep balls, with Kumponās being a 30-yard touchdown pass; Kumpon also had an interception earlier. An Andrew Pellicciotta touchdown run as well made it 34-0 heading into halftime.
Dan Riely Jr. added a score halfway through the third quarter, while the rest of the second half consisted of mainly JV players getting snaps, as the Friars cruised to a conference-opening win.
“I think the win is a byproduct of such a great week of practice. Weāve been practicing really well and itās a testament to our senior leadership,” head coach Dave Gueriera said. “Not just the seniors but the overall group of guys too. They work hard on and off the field and they deserve this. You get results like these when you put in the work.”
Normally thereās one or two specific people to point out when recapping the game, but there were contributions from too many names to single one out.
“We were able to spread the ball around and that was really nice to see. Always good to see guys flourish like that,” said Gueriera.

The Friars will face the Fords Friday night at home.
“They had a really nice win Thursday against Germantown,” Gueriera said. “Theyāre always a really tough opponent. They donāt take anybody lightly and the Haverford School always plays us tough.”
Three of Malvernās final four games are at home from here on out as well after just one game at Quigley Field before this week.
The Friars and Fords kick off at 7PM Friday night.
“Itās good to be home. We havenāt been home in a while and weāre excited about Haverford,” Gueriera said.
