Carey's Corner
FROM THE MALVERN ARCHIVES
A LOOK BACK
February, 2025
In the Olympics you have the standard of the top three- gold, silver and bronze. On ESPN and various other recognitions of accomplishment you have the proverbial Top 10. For this article on MP football receivers, I looked at the top 6 performances and/or performers. It gives me the opportunity to recognize and include the accomplishments of a few more players. There is the phrase that is often used on running backs. It is called carrying the rock. This is about the guys who caught the rock. Like the running backs , quarterbacks and kickers that have already been featured in previous Careys Corner. Like the others, this one is called “Get Me a 6 Pack- Receivers”
The attempt here is to compile stats for a game, a season, a career- yards and TDs and anything else I could find. If any of the stats look off or there is additional stat information that you know of please send to Rcarey5171@aol.com. I will update and add. Thanks for your help. Like the other lists I will continue to add stats as I find and compile more “stuff”.
Thanks again to the late Ted Silary at (www.tedsilary.com). These stats start from 1982. Will add prior years if I can verify complete stats for a season.

OTHER NOTES OF INTEREST
Ryan Edginton holds a “one and only record ” receivers. He is the ONLY guy to lead MP in receiving 3 years in a row (1996,1997,1998). That is rarified air folks. Frank Oschell (1996, 1997), Kevin Barr (2001,2002) Trey Womack (2004,2005), Joe Price (2007,2008) did it back to back but Ryan holds the title alone. “Edge” is on the MP Wall of Fame. Hopefully a few more of these guys will make it too.
Joe Price came closest to hitting 1000 yards in 2008 when he finished with 939 yards Two things that prevented Joe from hitting that mark. 1. Gamp was not a stat padder. Once the game was in hand, the starters were pulled. In 2008 the starters were often pulled by halftime. In the 4 games that Joe got some extended time, LaSalle, McDonough, Salesianum, and St. Joe Prep, he was lethal. Caught 23 balls for 618 yards for a big chunk of 26.8 yards per catch and 6 TDs. His performance topper happened to be the biggest game on the season. On Thanksgiving morning, before a packed crowd at Villanova stadium, Joe had 7 catches for 172 yards and 3 TDS. None more important than the game winner with under a minute to play. One of the best high school games I have ever watched.
Joe Hoban holds the record for as “the chunkiest guy” by averaging 27.7 yards a catch. That’s a big chunk. He was Ryan Nassib’s favorite target in 2006. Ryan completed 68 passes. Joe caught 30 of them (44%). Ryan threw for 1,402 yards. Joe caught 830 of them (59%). Ryan threw for 17 TDs. Joe Hoban caught 10 of them (59%). Yeah, I think these two worked well together. Ryan Edginton did it with 2 quarterbacks. He caught balls from Shaun Gallagher in 1996 and 1997. In 1998 his QB was Mike Ryan. In his senior Ryan caught 55% of the balls Mike threw. That accounted for 50% of Mikes yards and 45% of the TDs Mike threw.
Trey Womack also did it with 2 QBs- Brendan Sullivan in 2004 and Ian Mitchell in 2005. Ditto for Kevin Barr who caught balls from Bill Corbett and Matt Skellan (2000,20001)
Quincy Watson was a “whatever the team needed kind of extraordinary talent” and a lethal double threat who could catch and run. In 2017 he leads the team with 8 receiving TDs and 461 yards. The 2018 rolls around and it is, “Hey Quincy, we need you to run the football” Quincy responds with 903 yards and 8 TDs. For his career I have Quincy with 1,274 yards rushing 878 yards receiving and an identical 12 rushing TDs and 12 receiving TDs. Yeah he was that versatile and that good. More on Quincy when the 2018 tribute is posted.
In his back to back, Frank Oschell accounted for 50% of the 1,921 yards that Jody Goane and Matt Davis threw for. Frank was good for 975 yards in his junior and senior seasons.
Joe Carpenter made efficient use of his 23 receptions in 1986. Every 3rd catch was a TD. We call that a touchdown maker.
Mike Fay did the lax team proud by standing out in football too. Mike started slow as a soph and only caught 3 balls.2 of the them went for 51 and 59 yards; one was a TD. Lax players could make that kind of thing happen. Mike led the team in receiving in his junior year and in the “air it out” senior year he was one of 4 receivers who had over 325 yards receiving. In a “this would have been a record for the books if it happened, Malvern almost had 2 QBs throw for 1000 yards that season. Drew Gunther threw for 1100 yards and Kevin Doyle threw for 852 yards. These two QBs chucked it 264 times that year or 24x a game. (refer 2016 Team Page)
Just like Quincy Troy Gallen could run and catch also. Troy accomplishments have been featured in previous stats and stories. Check out Get Me a Six Pack April 2021. Only player to make the rushing and receiving 6 packs. That’s pretty impressive.
Jim Bruder caught balls from one of the best of all time Ryan Polley. Like Ryan, Drew Gunther is the only other QB who started for 3 years (Check out Tops in QBS, Get Me a Six Pack- Quarterbacks). Ryan sits 3rd all-time in career yards and career TDs. Like many of the talented receivers, in 1993 Jim caught close to 50% of Ryans throwing yards- (605 of 1,239 yards). Since 1982 Jim is only one of nine receivers to catch at least 35 balls is a season. That’s elite company.
Incredibly, Mike Bolte did has damage in only 6 catches. That’s chunk yardage on steroids at 34 yards per catch. Two of the catches went for TDs. With the way MP throws the ball now, you would think that record would have been broken by now. But then again, 200 yards by a receiver in any game is a lot of yards.
Chris Clair caught 7 TDs from QB Don Dougherty. 4 against GA and 3 against Chestnut Hill. In an interesting switch in 1971, Doc moved to receiver. Against Chestnut Hill, he caught 3 TD passes from QB Jay Calhoun. They covered 70, 40 and 35 yards. Doc also holds a unique record of multiple throwing and catching TDs against an opponent, throw for 4 against CHA in 1970 then catch 3 the following year against them.
More to come……………
