Malvern suffers first loss of season Friday to No. 2 Imhotep
PHILADELPHIA, Pa. – Malvern had their chances Friday night against No. 2 Imhotep Charter, but ultimately fell short 24-14 in their first loss of the season. The Friars are back in action Friday the 22nd, where they host Rock Creek Christian Academy in the first Friday night lights of the season at Quigley Field.
Malvern started off strong right out of the gate, with Andrew Pellicciotta taking it 39 yards to the house on the third play of the opening drive. From there though, Malvern struggled to generate any real offense for a number of drives – four straight drives were three-and-outs, and Imhotep went into the half up 10-7.
The Friars finally found rhythm on offense however to begin the second half, as Pellicciotta got the drive started with a 20-yard carry which was later followed up by a pair of back-to-back receptions from Zeke Bates – one being a touchdown to put Malvern up 14-10.
Imhotep would respond with a touchdown of their own though to give them the lead back at 17-14, and they’d get the ball right back again. But Pellicciotta would come up big once again with an interception which would set the Friars up in the red zone – however, a shot to the end zone was costly for Skyler Smith, with Imhotep picking him off at the very end of the third quarter to stay out in front of Malvern.
Moments later, seemingly Malvern got the break they needed. Bernard Blakey recovered a fumble and had the space to take it back for more, only for the play to be blown dead prematurely – meaning the clear fumble would not count, and it’d simply be a tackle; meaning Imhotep would keep the ball. And they later marched down the field to take a two-possession lead halfway through the fourth.
Smith would be picked off once again in moments of desparation late in the fourth, though it was a solid day for the junior under center. The runnning game struggled greatly against a tough Imhotep line, though Smith went 11-of-23 through the air for 130 yards and a touchdown while Luke Hardy had another solid outing, making four catches for 50 yards.
